Win your very own Ayno S by entering the Disegno photography competition (image: Midgard).

With the holiday season upon us, Disegno is delighted to launch a photography competition to win a new Ayno lamp, designed by Stefan Diez for Midgard.

Whether you have a dusty Cannon SLR, a disposable Kodak or a Samsung Galaxy S2 (other smartphones are available), it’s time to point and shoot to win one of two Ayno S lamps (retail price €225.00).

Ayno is an adjustable lamp, designed around a slim, fibreglass rod that elegantly curves into whatever arc you want. Bend the lamp into position through its textile-coated cable, and two adjustment rings hold it in form. It makes for an effortless, fully adjustable light, with no joints whatsoever.

It’s this mechanical simplicity that has inspired the Disegno competition. We’re looking for the best original photograph of an arc captured within a design and architecture context. Whether a shot of a soaring church arch; a carefully bowing form within product design; or even a play of light across a building or object, Disegno wants to see images that capture the beauty of the form. Get creative – best arc wins.

The competition has been kindly sponsored by Midgard, which was founded in 1919 by the engineer Curt Fischer and quickly came to widespread attention for its adjustable lamps – a number of which graced both the metal workshops and artists’ studios of the Bauhaus.

Despite its early success, Midgard had not produced a new lamp design since the 1950s. In 2015, however, the company was acquired by David Einsiedler and Joke Rasch who have set about restoring the company to its rightful position in design.

The Ayno, then, represents a second debut for Midgard. Designed by the celebrated Munich-based designer Stefan Diez, the Ayno family has already won the 2021 German Sustainability Award in Design, given in recognition of its simple assembly and use of widely available and recyclable materials.

The competition opens on 1 December and you have until Wednesday 14 December to submit your entries. The competition will be judged by Disegno’s editorial team.

To enter the competition please submit a photograph to competitions@disegnojournal.com under the subject line Midgard competition.
